What are Student Councils?
A Student Council is comprised of a group of students who are democratically elected to represent their peers. The Student Council is made up of students elected by their own class and who act as an enabling mechanism in becoming a partner in their education while making a positive contribution to the school and its unique spirit. It is a representative structure through which students can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with the school Administration for the benefit of the school and its students.
Successfully run Student Councils improve: ∙ Student/ Teacher relations.
∙ Student overall achievement.
∙ Student behaviour in and attitude to school. (Ministry of Education)
The St. Joseph Secondary School Student Council has been quite active through their efforts at peer counselling, fund raising and other activities during each school term. Some of the major successes include: An EDUVAN programme in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Youth affairs and an annual gospel concert. It is hoped that more students would become members of the Student Council and allow the voice of their peers to be heard in hope of creating a better school environment.
