The teachers of the Home Economics Department (morning and afternoon shifts) made a decision to incorporate the topic of Diabetes Mellitus in the scheme of work to be taught and evaluated by the three year groups (forms 1-3). This topic was covered in the Food and Nutrition component of the syllabus in the book three of : Caribbean Home Economics in Action. In addition, other relevant texts and resources were utilized to deliver the topic.
The now St. Joseph Secondary Diabetes Awareness Week was birthed as such a seed in 2005, with a display of sugar substitute products as well as some suggestions for healthy meals as breakfast and snacks in the Home Economics Department of the Clothing and Textile Room. Teachers were and students were invited to view the displays during break and lunch periods.
Subsequently, students were encouraged to participate in an essay and poem competition and prizes were donated by Nestle Ltd in the form of hampers. As the years rolled ahead and other aspects were added, there were many firsts which have now come to be a standard fixture in the activities for the week. These include poster competition, Quiz competition, spellathon, aerobics competition, fun day with the landmark line dance, chow and cook off competitions.
The first walkathon was from the school’s compound to Constantine’s Park in Macoya. All of these events could not have been realized without the sacrifice and efforts of dedicated members of staff and our kind sponsors from throughout the length and breadth of Trinidad.
After fourteen years, the first seed has grown into a mature tree which like any good plant produces fruit that mushrooms into new trees. Our school has provided a template that other institutions within Trinidad and Tobago have emulated and added to create their own unique twist .
As we observe and anticipate the winds of change, we also need to redefine and re-engineer future Diabetes Awareness Weeks to meet the challenges and needs of an evolving digital school environment that will be relevant and sustainable.
We are thankful for the building blocks that have been laid and will continue to build on them to create a learning environment with individuals that recognize the importance of living and managing healthy lives.
For and on behalf of all the dedicated administrators, teachers and ancillary staff who have and continue to contribute to St. Joseph Secondary School, thank you for your service and may Almighty God bless and keep you
