St Joseph Secondary Football Team is spearheaded by Head Coach Mr. Mc Nicol (who is also the School’s Safety Officer) and assistant coaches: Wade Patrick (School’s Library Assistant), Mr Orr (School’s Librarian), Mr. Pontiflet (Science teacher) and Naykuan Guevara (past student).
Coach Mc Nicol received his coaching license from Mr. Anton Corneal, former TT youth football team coach, Men’s team assistant and TTFA technical director. The footballers are taught the KNVB system (Royal Dutch Football) skills and teachings made famous by Dutch footballers Robin Van Persie, Arjen Robben, Ruud Van Nisstelrooy, Wesley Sneijder etc.
The team represents the school in the SSFL (Secondary School Football League) and in the year 2018 the team reached the semi-finals stage in the East Zone Senior Boys Under 20 competition. Earlier that year, the team placed second in the Diego Martin West Penn League. Our student Renaldo Padarath won the golden boot and the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in his age group. At one time in the competition the team won a match 4-2, playing with only eight (8) players versus the other team’s eleven (11) players.
Our football team’s motto is “Humble” which is chanted before every match as a reminder to be modest and thankful for victories in life and to remain positive and learn from our mistakes after a defeat.
Football is a medium where students learn discipline and interact with their peers and teachers outside of the normal school environment. It also gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents. In the year 2019, student Shay Caesar got transferred to St Anthony’s College through football and student Emmanuel Clarke got transferred to San Juan North Secondary to play Intercol football.
