St. Joseph Secondary School… Formerly known as Curepe Junior Secondary School has always had a great history and heritage in the area of Sports. Especially in the arena of BASKETBALL. From 2004 to 2019, the school had the distinction of being highly represented in both the Boys and Girls divisions of the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Basketball League. Coached by a technician, tactician and strategist of the game, Mr. Charles Patterson, who was a Safety Officer at the school, with his integration of the “Read and React” system to our style of play. Ably assisted by Mr. Kurt Moses, who is a teacher at the school and now coach.
In 2009 in the girls division, led by the very talented and gifted captaincy of Shanella Pierre, who was MVP both in the East Zone and National Championship, and competently assisted by Carissa Bonino, Makala Ryan, Tanisha James and Tunisia, swept the East Zone unbeaten to defeat the “Second Bug” and win their first championship. One week later, they continued their pursuit to achieve what no other girls Under 15 team had ever been able to accomplish. Pushing past the defiant and defending champion Tobago team, in the semifinals to then destroy Tranquillity Government Secondary School in the finals, to capture the National Basketball Championship.
From 2014 to 2016 the Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Basketball Association saw, undoubtedly, the best display of basketball from the most superior team to have played the game. Ahkeel (Smally) Boyd, Ahkeem (Fato) Boyd, Shakil Bertrand, Yohann Ferdinand, Tuishone Baptiste, Roneil Maguier, Jaheem Evelyn, Joshua Shepherd and Pedro Clarke played the game of basketball with style and flair, which had and have not been seen to this day. In 2015, so dominant was the team, that they (the same team), were in the three finals, played on the same day, that were offered, the Under 15, the, Under 17 and Under 20. Capturing the Under 15 and Under 17 Championship Titles, whilst suffering the slenderest of losses, by one point, in the under 20. However, in 2016 the team continued to play unbeaten as they went on to successfully defend their Under 17 Title and capture the Under 20 Championship Title. The Under 15 Title was up for grasps as St. Joseph Secondary School did not field an Under 15 team.
